Our Thematic Areas of Work
CYAN Kenya works across five thematic areas to improve health, protection, civic participation, economic opportunities and community resilience for adolescents and young people.
Adolescent and Youth Health
CYAN Kenya strengthens access to integrated health services for adolescents and young people, including sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR), HIV prevention and PrEP linkage, mental health, and menstrual health. Programs are delivered through peer educators, Youth Peer Providers, SRHR clubs in schools, health community fairs, and Community Health Promoter integration for last-mile household follow-up.
Gender Equality and Protection
CYAN Kenya advances gender equality by challenging harmful social norms, strengthening survivor-centered GBV referral pathways, and engaging men and communities as partners in change. The work includes GBV community forums, mobile legal aid clinics, psychosocial support for survivors, disability inclusion across all programs, and full PSEA compliance. A gender lens is applied across all program pillars.
Youth Civic Engagement and Social Accountability
CYAN Kenya enhances meaningful youth participation in governance through civic education, Youth Advocacy Committees across all eight sub-counties, social accountability forums, community scorecards, budget analysis, and formal petitions to county government. The SHINE integrity and anti-corruption initiative in tertiary institutions, implemented with KAS Kenya and the EU, is a flagship program under this pillar.
Youth Economic Empowerment and Livelihoods
CYAN Kenya addresses the economic drivers of poor health and GBV outcomes through market-linked skills training, Village Savings and Loan Associations, business incubation and mentorship, digital literacy through the Huawei DigiTruck partnership, and microfinance referral. The Youth Resource Hub under construction in Suba Sub-County will serve as a vocational training and social enterprise platform from 2026.
Climate Action and Community Resilience
CYAN Kenya empowers youth in climate mitigation and community resilience through eco-clubs, community tree nurseries, climate-smart livelihoods for Lake Victoria fishing communities, and anticipatory action programming. Climate justice advocacy reaches county and national government through structured forums, community-led monitoring, and evidence-based submissions.
